Do you have an emergency plan but aren't sure if you could implement it in the event of a fire or flood in your archives? Not really sure what to do with the box of wet documents or photographs? Haven't had experience organizing and leading a response team? Then this is the workshop for you!

Join your colleagues in this two-day workshop to gain knowledge in emergency response and practical hands-on experience in salvage procedures. Topics will include:

  • Skills and attributes of an effective response team and leader
  • Health and safety issues in emergency response
  • Public relations and communication during an emergency
  • Salvage procedures for various types of archival records
  • Salvage priorities and handling the unexpected
  • Networking, training and resources

The workshop will be instructed by AAO Archives Advisor and Conservator, Iona McCraith.

Cost: Per workshop $250 + HST for AAO members and $400 per workshop for non-members. Minimum participation is 10 for this workshop with a maximum set at 15.

Due to the nature of this workshop there is a need to organize tools and supplies for participants further in advance; therefore registration will close on Friday, October 12, 2015.

Please note: If the minimum participant number is not reached the workshop will be cancelled. 

About the instructor:

Iona McCraith is currently Archives Advisor for the Archives Association of Ontario. Since 1999, she has maintained a private practice as a preservation consultant and archival materials conservator. She is also the AAO’s coordinator for their Archives Emergency Response Network program.

Previously Iona was employed as Senior Conservator, City of Toronto Archives (1983-1991); Head Conservator, Archives of Ontario (1991-1999) and as AAO Preservation Consultant (1999-2012). Between 1999 – 2005 she was also a sessional instructor in the Collections Conservation and Management Program at Fleming College, Peterborough and  taught in the Archival Management Certificate Program at George Brown College Department of Continuing Education in Toronto for several years. 

Iona is Chair of the Canadian Council of Archives Preservation Committee and in her 30+ year career has developed extensive knowledge and experience in emergency planning and response.
